Following her successful presentation of her poem, “Lost”, at the UNAA Youth Voice on Peace, Justice and Climate Action Workshop, Sadiya Ismail was invited by Just Peace Australia to present her inspiring words at the International Day of Peace Lecture held on Saturday 21 September 2019. The setting of the event was the stunning St. John’s Cathedral and Sadiya found herself presenting alongside prestigious speakers, including Leanne Smith (UNAA Goodwill Ambassador and Director of the Whitlam Institute) and Peter Black (QUT Senior Lecturer in Law). The Guest speaker of the evening was Sophie McNeill – ABC Four Corners Journalist – who provided an eye-opening account of the realities of the human cost of war that has scourged our planet.
The evening was certainly inspiring and afforded Sadiya the opportunity to showcase her immense talent and concerns regarding peace and justice in the Twenty First Century. Students who were present grabbed the opportunity to meet acclaimed journalist, Sophie McNeill to discuss their views and to ask about her experiences in the field.
Alhamdullilah, we are very proud of Sadiya’s accomplishments and hope to provide her with future opportunities to develop her eloquence and skill.
